Throwing on the Pottery Wheel

Centering

When it comes to creating pottery, one of the most crucial and fundamental steps is centering the clay on the wheel. This process is essential in order to create symmetrical and evenly formed pieces. Centering involves using your hands and body to manipulate the clay into a perfectly balanced position on the wheel, ready for shaping. It may seem like a simple task, but for beginners, it can often prove to be quite challenging. However, with practice and patience, anyone can master the art of centering. To start, make sure your wheel is well-greased and the clay is wedged and ready to use. Begin by gently placing the clay on the center of the wheel, using your body weight to keep it in place. Ensure that your hands are clean and free of any excess water or clay, as this can make the process more difficult. Next, use your fingertips to push the clay downwards and towards the center of the wheel. This will help create a cone shape that is crucial for centering the clay.

Once you have the cone shape, use your palms to push the clay downwards, while simultaneously pressing your thumbs into the center of the clay. As you do this, make sure to keep the clay wet and lubricated with water. This will help prevent it from sticking to your hands and the wheel. Continue to push and pull the clay until it is in the center of the wheel and feels stable. This will take some practice, but eventually, you will be able to feel when the clay is perfectly centered.

Trimming

Once you have successfully centered the clay, it is time to begin shaping and trimming your piece. Trimming is the process of refining and smoothing the surface of the pottery by removing excess clay. This is often done after the initial shaping is complete and the piece has dried slightly. Trimming not only creates a more visually pleasing piece but can also add strength to the structure.

To begin trimming, use a sharp trimming tool or a needle tool to carefully cut away any excess clay along the bottom of the piece. Make sure to work carefully and slowly, as you do not want to damage the piece or create any cracks. Next, use a rib tool to smooth out the surface and create any desired lines or curves. This will give the piece a more polished and refined look.

Pulling Handles

One of the most unique and visually appealing aspects of pottery is the handles that are attached to different pieces. Pulling handles can be a challenging task, but the end result is worth the effort. Handles not only add functionality to a piece but can also enhance its overall aesthetic. To pull a handle, start by wedging and preparing a separate piece of clay. Next, roll the clay into a long, even cylinder shape. This will serve as the base for your handle. Secure the end of the cylinder to the piece of pottery where you want the handle to attach. Using your fingers, gently pull and stretch the clay towards you, creating a thin, even handle. This may take some practice and patience, but keep in mind that imperfections and variations in the handle can add character and uniqueness to the piece. Once the handle has been pulled to the desired length, use a cutting wire or knife to carefully trim the excess clay. Smooth out any rough edges or bumps with a rib tool. Make sure to attach the other end of the handle securely to the piece, using some water to help the clay stick together. Allow the handle to dry and set before handling the piece further.

With a few simple techniques and some dedicated practice, anyone can master the art of throwing pottery on the wheel. Centering, trimming, and pulling handles are just a few essential steps in creating beautiful and functional pottery pieces. Remember to always have fun and let your creativity guide you as you shape and form each unique piece.
